Every birth story is unique, but each one carries something meaningful for the next mother preparing for her own experience.
Christine’s Story
The preparation I received from my LovingBirths class was invaluable. I took Taylor’s class with my sister-in-law and my mother as my birth assistants, and it was the right choice for me. I knew they would be able to support and advocate for me as I labored in the hospital.
I felt prepared physically, mentally, and emotionally. I trusted my body and had coping skills that came directly from Taylor’s class. During the early stages of labor I knew not to pay attention to soon. I kept moving and doing normal activities until I had to start really focusing through the rushes. I arrived at the hospital and kept moving about. I could feel that the rushes were getting good work done. I visualized during each one and welcomed the increasing strength. Once late labor began, the side-lying relaxation position, with my leg supported, became my go-to. I was so relaxed during contractions that it looked like I was sleeping. My sister-in-law made sure I was not disturbed during those moments and that the atmosphere around me was calm and private. At some point I was actually able to take little cat naps between contractions, surprisingly possible.
After several hours of steady work, the intensity increased. I voiced some doubt, as my techniques for relaxing seemed to be less effective. My sister-in-law recognized that I was likely in transition. She suggested getting into the bath, and it was exactly what I needed. The water eased the intensity and helped me settle again.
After about an hour, I moved back to the bed as the urge to push began. My husband joined me at that point. It was my preparation that gave me the confidence to make adjustments during this stage. I chose when to push and how long to push. I listened to my body and softened the strongest urges at the peaks of contractions with gentle puffs and hisses.
A short time later, I was holding my baby.
I can’t fully describe that moment. It was calm and peaceful. I know it was possible because I had the tools I needed and the ability to release into labor. That was something I didn’t understand until taking Taylor’s class.
I truly wish more women could experience this kind of preparation. It was worth every penny and more.
