The Best of Both: Posed + Lifestyle Newborn Photography

A Partner Spotlight from LovingBirths Collective

Those first days with a new baby are such a small window of time. They can feel tender, exhausting, beautiful, and a little blurry all at once. And before you know it, the tiny details begin to change.

At LovingBirths Collective, part of what we hope to do is connect families not only with education for birth, but with wonderful local professionals who can support and serve them throughout pregnancy and into life with a new baby.

That’s why we’re happy to introduce Caitlin Miranda, Atlanta photographer.

With more than 10 years of experience photographing newborns, she has developed an approach that gives families something many don’t realize they can have: the beautiful, timeless newborn portraits they imagine alongside the natural, unscripted moments that tell the story of what life actually felt like in those first days.

We asked her to share a little about her approach and why she doesn’t believe families should have to choose between the two.

The Best of Both: Posed + Lifestyle Newborn Photography

After more than 10 years of photographing newborns, I’ve learned that my favorite sessions are the ones that don’t fit neatly into one category.

I love posed newborn photography. There’s something about those simple, timeless portraits. The tiny fingers, little toes, sleepy faces, all of those details that change so quickly. I want my clients to have those images. The ones they can picture framed on the wall and still love years from now.

But I also want the rest of the story.

The way a new mom naturally holds her baby. Dad looking down at them. A toddler climbing onto the bed because they suddenly want to be part of everything. Everyone cuddled together, not necessarily perfectly posed, but completely themselves.

That’s why I don’t believe families should have to choose between posed and lifestyle photography. I want to create both.

My sessions usually start with those more traditional newborn portraits. I’ll carefully pose your baby, pay attention to the little details, and create those classic images that are such a special part of newborn photography. But once we have them, I like to let things become a little more relaxed.

I’ll guide you through family photos, but I don’t want you spending the entire session thinking about where your hands should go or whether you’re doing it “right.” I’ll give you direction when you need it, and then I’ll let you interact with your baby.

Sometimes that means sitting together on the bed. Sometimes it’s a sibling giving the baby a kiss. Sometimes it’s just the two of you looking down at your baby without thinking about the camera at all.

Those are the moments I’m watching for.

And after more than 10 years of photographing newborns, I’ve learned pretty quickly that babies are going to have their own plans.

Some babies sleep through an entire session. Some need to eat constantly. Some are perfectly happy being posed, while others would much rather be in their parents’ arms.

I’m completely comfortable with that.

A newborn session doesn’t have to run perfectly for us to get beautiful photos. If your baby needs a break, we take one. If they need to be held, we hold them. If something unexpected happens, we work with it.

Sometimes the moment that happens because we had to stop is the one that ends up being your favorite photograph.

That same approach is why I love photographing newborns in their homes.

You’ve just had a baby. You don’t need to pack up everyone and everything and try to get somewhere on time. You can stay in your own space, feed your baby when they need it, grab a snack, change an outfit, or take a break without having to leave the house.

And your home doesn’t need to be perfect.

I’ll find the best light and work with what you have. The nursery, your bedroom, the couch where you’ve already spent countless hours holding your baby, all of those little pieces of your life can become part of the photographs.

I think that’s what makes an in-home session feel so personal. We’re not creating a backdrop for your family. We’re photographing your family where you actually are.

Because to me, newborn photography isn’t just about photographing a baby. It’s about capturing what your family looks like in this little window of time.

The perfectly posed portrait. The sleepy little details. The laughter, the cuddles, and the chaos.

That’s the best of both.

We love that philosophy.

There is something especially beautiful about having both: the portrait you’ll frame and keep forever, and the photograph that instantly takes you back to what those early days actually felt like.

Thank you to Caitlin Miranda for sharing her perspective with the LovingBirths community and for giving families permission to let their newborn photos hold a little bit of both: beautiful preparation and beautiful real life.
